Picked fight with the wrong guy? Donald Trump angers Conor McGregor by praising Khabib Nurmagomedov

Former US President and Republican candidate for the presidential elections in November may have had his fair share of fights on TV, including as a reality TV show host or when he fought the then-WWE Chairman Vince McMahon at WrestleMania 23.

The 78-year-old seems to have picked another fight, this time with a man you don't want to mess with. Trump has rubbed UFC legend Conor McGregor the wrong way after claiming that former Russian MMA star Khabib Nurmagomedov is his favourite.

The duo, arguably two of the toughest men ever to step into the UFC octagon, never saw eye-to-eye, to put it mildly. In fact, at UFC 229, the only time the two men came face-to-face in the ring, Khabib emerged victorious via submission.

Khabib, who has a 29-0 win record, retired from MMA undefeated in 2020.

What Trump said about Khabib

Given their history, Trump praising Khabib has not gone down well with the Irishman.

"Campaign-ending decision. A smelly fat mountain monkey from the inbred mountains of Dagestan is your favourite UFC (AMERICAN COMPANY) fighter? Wow. Abysmal," McGregor said in an X post while quoting the Trump interview video.

In the video, which is from an interview with gaming streamer Adin Ross, Trump can be heard showering praises on Khabib when asked about who his favourite MMA fighter was.

Trump also goes on to describe Khabib's undefeated streak and the conversations they had when they met twice in the past.

How McGregor responded

McGregor followed up with a barrage of nasty tweets, targeting the Russian fighter.

McGregor gets response from future opponent

The Twitter firestorm finally got some response, not from Trump, but from Michael Chandler, the American fighter who is in line to face McGregor in December.

"Stop it. If you had half the balls that DT had, you would have shown up on June 29th. Instead, you¡¯re normal walking, beer chuggin¡¯, Austin 3:16 style at a local fight show/motorcycle rally in South Dakota, a RED, 100% #maga state, by the way," Chandler said.
