In her first interview after replacing Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate, Harris told CNN that she was flipping pancakes and frying bacon with her family when she got a call from Biden.

Family, pancakes and bacon
"My family was staying with us, including my baby nieces, and we had just had pancakes," Harris said.
"'Auntie, can I have more bacon?' 'Yes, I'll make you more bacon,'" she said.
"And the phone rang, and it was Joe Biden, and he told me what he had decided to do. And I asked him, 'Are you sure?' And he said, 'Yes,'" she recalled.

How Biden ended his re-election bid
Last month, 81-year-old Biden dropped out of the presidential race, saying it was in "the best interest" of the Democratic Party and the country to withdraw from the race. Despite his age and growing concerns over his health, Biden had initially refused to back out of the race, raising some alarm bells among the Democratic ranks.

However, his poor showing at the first presidential debate, where he failed to counter or put up any solid argument against Trump, was the last straw for many, who openly called for Biden to end his campaign. Finally, on July 21, Biden ended his re-election bid and endorsed Harris to be the party's nominee.
Kamala Harris's day-one priority
In her first interview, Harris said helping address economic woes and bolstering the middle class would be her day-one priority.

She also stated that voters were ready ¡°to turn the page¡± on former President Donald Trump.
