Six years after an 11-year-old British schoolboy, Alex Batty went missing during a family trip in Spain, he has been discovered alive in Revel, Haute-Garonne, southwestern France, according to a report by French news outlet La Depeche.
Where is Alex now?
Alex, who is now 17, disappeared in 2017 while on vacation in Marbella with his mother, Melanie Batty, and grandfather, David Batty, despite both adults being prohibited from accompanying him due to domestic issues.
His grandmother, Susan Caruana, who permitted the vacation, raised the alarm when they failed to return, suspecting they had abducted him.
In interviews, Caruana said she believed her daughter and ex-husband had taken Alex abroad to lead an "alternative lifestyle" away from mainstream schooling. She had not heard from Alex since his disappearance.
The trio had joined a traveling spiritual community, often staying in Aude and Ari¨¨ge in southern France. Last week, Alex decided to leave the group, embarking on a solo journey.
After being picked up by a suspicious truck driver, the police were called. Despite lacking identifiable information, the police, after questioning him, are confident it is Alex Batty.
Facing investigators, Alex recounted his extraordinary journey serenely, and his story has been verified.
Following a hearing, he was placed under the care of the department's social services while awaiting his relatives.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is working with French authorities to authenticate the report, stating that the case is complex and ongoing. Melanie Batty and David Batty, Alex's mother and grandfather, remain wanted in connection with his disappearance.
The French police have officially identified the discovered individual as Alex Batty, while Greater Manchester Police have mentioned that they are "speaking to his family in England."
The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) released a statement stating, "We are assisting a British national in France and maintaining communication with local authorities."
