In a charming story from Finland, a book by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was returned to a library 84 years past its due date.
Helsinki Central Library Oodi shared on social media that someone recently brought back a Finnish translation of Doyle's historical novel "Refugees," which had been due on December 26, 1939.
The library's post cheerfully noted, "Always better late than never."
Librarian Heini Strand commented that there was no information on why the book was so overdue, but she had a theory.
"Usually, these kinds of loans returned decades after the due date are books found when people go through deceased relatives' belongings," she told The Guardian.
Strand also pointed out that the book had been due back one month after the Soviet Union invaded Finland in November 1939.
"The return of the book might not have been the first thing on the borrower's mind when the due date approached," she said.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of books and the unexpected journeys they can take.
It also highlights the human stories behind library records, where each overdue book has its own tale.
The return of this nearly century-old book, especially amidst the tumultuous backdrop of 1939, adds a touch of history and mystery.
