UK Woman Breaks Ties With Her "Greedy" Family After ? 1,550 Crore Lottery Win
Following the lottery win, Bayford, residing in Scotland, started settling debts accumulated by her father and brother, totaling about $887,079, stemming from unsuccessful business ventures.
Gillian Bayford and her former husband experienced a life-altering moment in August 2012 when they won the equivalent of $187.5 million in a EuroMillions lottery. However, the substantial windfall had unforeseen consequences, leading to the unraveling of significant relationships in her life.
Gave around $25 million to her family members
Bayford revealed to The Sun that she generously gave approximately ?20 million, around $25 million, to her family members. Despite these financial contributions, she eventually severed ties with them, even missing out on an invitation to her brother's wedding.
"They have lost touch with where they've come from," she said of her family in an interview.
Following the lottery win, Bayford, residing in Scotland, started settling debts accumulated by her father and brother, totaling about $887,079, stemming from unsuccessful business ventures. She further supported her family by purchasing an apartment in Scotland for her parents, who were previously living in a caravan.
Approximately nine months after winning the lottery, her parents urged her to financially assist her brother in starting a new business. Bayford acquiesced to their request, providing ?800,000, or about $1 million.
However, the relationship soured, and she found herself excluded from her brother's wedding, marking a significant deterioration in family bonds.
Despite financial support, they severed ties with her
Despite her continued financial support, Bayford's relationships with her family members continued to decline. She no longer in contact with her mother, with reports in 2016 stating that she had fallen out with her parents as they were embarrassment of her. The substantial lottery win, meant to bring joy, ended up causing unexpected turmoil in Bayford's personal life.
In an interview with the Mirror in 2016, Bayford's mother, Brenda McCulloch, described feeling "sad" about the lack of contact with her daughter and grandchildren. She said that while her daughter was "incredibly generous," she disputed the ?20 million sum, claiming it was a much lower amount they were given.
Speaking to The Sun about her family, Bayford said: "They're rubbing people's noses in it by flashing their cash, which I think is downright nasty."
Family "demanding and greedy"
In an earlier interview, which she gave to The Sun in 2016, she said: "It's upsetting and raw. The money was supposed to make everybody happy. But it's made them demanding and greedy."
Gillian Bayford's challenges extended beyond strained relationships with her blood relatives. The significant lottery win also played a role in the separation from her husband, Adrian Bayford, occurring 15 months after their jackpot victory, as reported by The Sun.
Adrian Bayford shared with The Daily Mail in 2013 that winning the lottery brought unexpected stress, and the demands of managing their newfound wealth led to them spending less time together.
Emily Irwin, an advisor for Wells Fargo who counsels lottery winners on financial matters, highlighted the potential challenges. She suggested that winners consider enlisting the help of a family-dynamics coach to navigate the complexities of conversations with family members.
