The earthquake, measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale, struck Taiwan on Wednesday, marking the strongest seismic activity in the country in 25 years. The epicenter was located off the coast of rural Hualien County, causing widespread damage and chaos.
In Hualien, buildings were left askew, and ground floors were crushed, while in the capital Taipei, structures swayed violently, causing tiles from older buildings to fall. The Taiwanese government reported nine fatalities in Hualien county, where the earthquake's impact was most severe. The number of injured has surpassed 1,000, with 38 individuals still missing, and nearly a dozen hotel workers have been rescued.
