Walking in at 68/4 against South Africa in Bloemfontein, Sehwag put his head down to take on a potent pace attack lead by Shaun Pollock.
He added 220 runs with Sachin Tendulkar (155) and kept hosts at bay for most of the day. The aggression was channelised properly and the ball was going to the boundary with relative ease.
Then came the moment which was anticipated since he entered the 90s. He joined the likes of Gundappa Viswanath and Sourav Ganguly in the list of Indians to score Test hundreds on debut.
Eventually Sehwag fell for 105, his innings lasted 173 balls and contained 19 fours.
India lost by 9 wickets, but Sehwag showed the world that he was ready for Test cricket.
He finished with over 8000 runs and two triple hundreds, but it all started that fine day when he took the first steps in the oldest format of the game.
