VR gaming is often seen as a medium to make the gaming experience more engrossing and more lifelike. However, now, the founder of Oculus VR headsets has created one that could kill you in real life the moment you die in a game.

Palmer Luckey, the original founder of the VR headset company before it was acquired by Facebook (now Meta), developed this headset taking inspiration from popular novel and anime series Sword Art Online.
To the unaware, SAO is a story about players who are trapped in a massive VR combat simulator where the only way to survive is to either win the game or find an escape.
Players in the game wear a special headset and a ¡®NerveGear¡¯ suit that not just makes the players feel everything, but can also kill them.

Luckey has only created the VR headset for now, and the prototype is loaded with charges that explode, obliterating the brain of the wearer if they manage to trigger an ¡®appropriate game over¡¯ screen.
Luckey has also highlighted that he¡¯s still halfway there to creating the true NerveGear and that the perfect VR half of the equation could still be years away.

Before you freak out, no one is actually playing using this VR headset. Luckey himself hasn¡¯t tried it on yet, in case some kind of miscalculation ends up killing him along the way. He describes this as a piece of ¡®office art¡¯, claiming it¡¯s the only VR headset in existence that can actually kill its wearer.
The shift to creating lethal gaming tech makes somewhat sense from his current role as the founder of Anduril Industries -- a company that makes AI-based surveillance and defence systems for the US military. The company recently got its hands on a $1 billion contract to lead counter unmanned systems to work for the US Special Ops Command.
