A Tech Millionaire Bought This Massive Cold War Era Radar To 'Find UFOs'

Millionaires are back at it again! A tech millionaire recently bought a giant Cold War era radar in hopes of finding UFOs.

It all started on Reddit, when British tech entrepreneur William Sachiti expressed his desire to make the radar spin again. At the time, Sachiti had been working at the abandoned Royal Air Force (RAF) air defence radar station for three months. Then, he created a thread on Reddit, saying - "Help! I want to bring this back to life."

Sachiti was referring to a massive dish from the Cold War era, about 60 feet across and 25 feet tall. It can send out microwaves to the range of 402 kilometres (250 miles).

A joke that is now potentially real

At the time, Sachiti had posted his Reddit thread anonymously, but not much later, the thread went viral. When someone had asked him why Sachiti had purchased the RAF base, he said that it was "because [he] convinced [himself] it may be good fun to use to attempt to find UFOs."

While Sachiti told Vice that it was a joke, other people had apparently reached out to him seriously hoping to find UFOs. He mentioned how aliens may actually be more advanced than humans can imagine. "The reason it doesn¡¯t concern me too much is there¡¯s been all this time and there¡¯s not been actionable information," he said.

"If an ant decided to contact humans, would we even know¡­ these UFOs, if there is some sort of intelligence behind them, well they¡¯ve ignored us for the most part," he added.

Turns out, the roboticist and AI specialist had bought the base because he needed more land for testing and development purposes for his other endeavours.

The AMES Type 84 radar unit on the property is from the Cold War era. It was used as a warning system to alert the British military in case nuclear weapons were to hit them. During its operational years, 1962 to 1994, the radar unit had pumped out insane amount of ionised radiation.
