A ChatGPT Bug Compromised The Privacy Of Many Users, OpenAI CEO Claims
According to Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, a bug allowed users to see descriptions of conversations that other users were having with the system. "We feel awful about this," he said in a Twitter post.
ChatGPT isn't perfect - we've been saying this from the start. Although it does a near-perfect job of conversational content, it can still pitch outdated information as new and is susceptible to plagiarism. Now, OpenAI, the company behind the disruptive chatbot claims that ChatGPT has suffered a "significant issue" that has compromised the privacy of its users.

What happened to ChatGPT?
It all began on Twitter and Reddit when users began to share snapshots of conversations in their history that weren't theirs. Then, it was assumed that these conversations came from strangers. Many users reported that they were seeing conversations in other languages that could potentially carry sensitive information.

On Monday, ChatGPT was down and it was initially pinned on a bug. Not much later, it was reported that OpenAI was forced to take ChatGPT offline due to the problem at hand.

Altman noted that the bug had affected a "small percentage" of users without explicitly stating how many users were truly affected. In addition, he noted that the issue was a result of a "bug in an open source library" without offering specifics.
Currently, a fix for the same is being rolled out.

Owing to this, many users may not be able to see their chat history. Altman has promised that OpenAI would "follow up with a technical postmortem."

But if you're sharing sensitive data with ChatGPT, it might not be the best idea. OpenAI has openly urged users against doing the same, for it reviews conversations to train the artificial intelligence chatbot.
