Chinese Hackers Aim 40,000 Cyber Attacks On India In 5 Days, Warn Maharashtra Police
Chinese hackers are notoriously famous for such attacks around the globe.
Following the face off between Indian and Chinese troops at the Galwan Valley, it looks like Chinese hackers have been extensively targeting India¡¯s IT infrastructure with cyber attacks.
A top police official in Maharashtra has now warned that cyber attacks from China have increased substantially, with over 40,000 of such attacks being conducted within the last five days.
The official warns of a similar looming cyber threat to India¡¯s banking sector.
On Tuesday, Yashasvi Yadav, Special Inspector General of Police of the Maharashtra Police's cyber wing called ¡®Maharashtra Cyber¡¯, stated that the force had gathered information about such attempts over the past five days. As per Yadav, most of these attacks were found to have originated in Chengdu area in China.
Chinese hackers on the rampage
"According to our information at least 40,300 cyber attacks were attempted in the last four-five days on the resources in Indian cyberspace," Yadav was quoted as saying in a PTI report. The cyber attacks were meant to cause issues including ¡°denial of service, hijacking of Internet Protocol and phishing¡±, as per Yadav.
Chinese hackers have been notoriously famous for such attacks around the globe. In a shocking report released in April this year, Blackberry Ltd.indicated that Chinese state sponsored hackers stole data from computers across the globe for almost around a decade.
A major reason for this unnoticed attack was its target, Linux operating systems. The 44-page long report highlighted that advanced hackers from China camouflaged their software tools posing a low level security risk in the form of advertisements. With this, they used to extract information out of their targeted systems.
Chinese hackers new form of warfare
A similar allegation was made by U.S officials in May, warning of a cyber threat from Chinese hackers to the healthcare facilities in the country, especially the ones working on COVID-19 research. The officials claimed that hackers from China were trying to break into organizations in America who are working on COVID-19 research and steal their data.
Both the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as well as the Department of Homeland Security warned of the attacks and asked organisations and public healthcare professionals to be vigilant for such cyber theft.
A similar warning was issued by IGP Yadav on Tuesday. Internet users in India should pay attention to such cyber attacks, conduct cyber security audits and create robust ¡®firewalls¡¯, the IGP recommended.
