Apple has been in the news again, after not helping out the authorities on the Pensacola shooting case. Authorities caught hold of the Saudi attacker¡¯s smartphone and has been unable to breach into the device to retrieve data from it.
Law enforcement approached Apple to unlock the device for them. However, the ¡®user-privacy-first¡¯ brand hasn¡¯t provided necessary assistance for the same.
Enraged, POTUS Donald Trump, as expected, tweeted about it stating, "We are helping Apple all of the time on trade and so many other issues, and yet they refuse to unlock phones used by killers, drug dealers and other violent criminal elements. They will have to step up to the plate and help our great Country, 'NOW! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN'."
The response from POTUS came right after US Attorney General William Barr on Tuesday revealed the Florida naval airbase attack by a Saudi cadet was actually an act of 'jihadist terror'. According to Barr, the investigation has revealed that the cadets had jihadist material and indecent images of children in their possession.
Barr said in a statement, "We have asked Apple for their help in unlocking the shooter's iPhones. So far Apple has not given us any substantive assistance." Apple provided authorities access to the iCloud data but refused to unlock the device.
Government has been asking for backdoor access to device encryption for a while now. Recently, Satya Nadella sided with Apple stating encryption backdoors are a terrible idea ¡°I do think backdoors are a terrible idea, that is not the way to go about this. We¡¯ve always said we care about these two things: privacy and public safety. We need some legal and technical solution in our democracy to have both of those be priorities.¡±
