Elon Musk Sets Twitter 'Blue Tick' Fee At $8 Per Month, Lists Perks For 'Verified' Users
Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, has confirmed that users who wish to see the "blue tick," which signifies that their account has been verified as legitimate, would be required to pay $8 per month.
"Twitter's current lords and peasants system for who has or doesn't have a blue checkmark is bullshit. Power to the people! Blue for $8/month," Mr. Musk tweeted.
"Price adjusted by country proportionate to purchasing power parity," Mr. Musk said, without telling the method he used to decide "purchasing power".
Mr. Musk's new plan for the verified icon also includes giving genuine users some superpowers.
"You will also get: Priority in replies, mentions, and searches, which is essential to defeating spam/scams. Ability to post long videos and audio. Half as many ads. And paywall bypass for publishers willing to work with us," Mr. Musk, the chief executive of Tesla Motors, tweeted.

Mr. Musk's Twitter takeover poses significant challenges for the businessman who faces calls from people of all political hues to hear them out.
These demands include requests for bringing back on the platform people like former US President Donald Trump, whose Twitter account was suspended for allegedly dog-whistling supporters to take to violence after the US election results in January 2021 showed he had lost.
Twitter Blue was unveiled in June last year as the platform's first subscription service. For a monthly subscription fee, it provides "exclusive access to premium features," including the ability to modify tweets.
After Musk asked tens of millions of Twitter followers whether they wanted an edit button in April, the feature to edit tweets was also made accessible earlier this month. Yes votes totalled almost 70%.
According to a separate Sunday Verge post citing staff members with knowledge of the situation, Musk also had ordered that logged-out users visiting Twitter's website be redirected to the Explore tab, highlighting trending tweets.
