Popular FarmVille Game Will Shut Down, As Will Other Facebook Games In 2021
Today, however, is a sad day for the former digital farmers. The game developer of FarmVille has announced today that the beloved farming strategy game will be no longer available starting 2021.
When Facebook just started to catch on in India around 2008-2009 one of the many things that helped them in generating a number of users on its platform were online games that would run on Facebook.
Games like PetVille, Draw Something and of course, FarmVille. These games hooked so many people on their screens for hours, seeing their digital growth. FarmVille in particular had quite a fan-following -- seeing the digital crops that you sow, taking care of them once every few hours, waiting for them to be ready for harvest -- oh what an experience it was. It also was the fastest way people made friends on the social media platform, adding people left, right and centre to get bonus points. At one time, the game experienced over 30 million players, which is crazy for the time.
And while there are many who still play these games, many (like me) shifted to play more challenging and interesting titles. Today, however, is a sad day for the former digital farmers. The game developer of FarmVille has announced today that the beloved farming strategy game will be no longer available starting 2021.
This is because Facebook will cease to support games running on Flash after Adobe killed it completely a few years ago, and with web developers shifting to HTML5.
Facebook made the announcement, stating, ¡°To make sure developers experience continued product support and a platform that complies with the highest security standards, we will end new game submissions for Web Games on Facebook by December 31, 2020 and Gameroom will be closed entirely on June 30, 2021. Both Gameroom and Web Games on Facebook host many Flash games that will be removed due to Flash end of life.¡±
The game is scheduled to disable in-app purchases for the game completely starting November 17, but the game will remain live till December 31, so you will be able to play with your existing inventory.
In case you¡¯re very disappointed by this, don¡¯t be. Zynga -- the game developer who made FarmVille is working on a mobile version of the app where players can continue their digital farming.
