Facebook Reveals Its Creepy, Ray-Ban Smart Glasses: What About Privacy?

After being leaked all over the internet, Facebook has finally gone ahead and unveiled its first-generation smart glasses -- Ray-Ban Stories, collaborating with the popular Italian eyewear brand.

The glasses are equipped with two 5-megapixel cameras that let you capture and share images or videos on your social media handles. It allows you to take up to 30-second videos with the help of a capture button on the right temple, as well as through voice commands.

Right near the temple tips, the glasses are equipped with open-ear speakers as well as three beamforming microphones to take calls without cancelling out the outside world.

The smart glasses pair with FacebookĄ¯s View app that shares stories and memories seamlessly with friends and social media followers while also managing videos and photos captured on the smart glasses.

Sadly the glasses arenĄ¯t water-resistant, so make sure you take them off when it starts to rain.

What about privacy?

Facebook and Ray-Ban highlight that theyĄ¯ve put great emphasis on privacy while developing these glasses. The content on the View app will remain on the view app and will only be shared on social media after the user decides to share it.

The glasses also get a tiny button on the left hinge to turn off the smart features at times when you want simple, non-techy eyewear. Moreover, the glasses are locked to your account and in case you misplace them, no one can go through its contents without logging in with your Facebook account.

It has also made a few privacy measures for people in front of the camera. It has a white LED indicator to show when the camera is recording.

Ray-Ban Stories start at a price tag of $299 (which is around Rs 22,000) are available in 20 variations, including classic Ray-Ban styles --Wayfarer, Wayfarer Large, Round and Meteor -- as well as five colours with different lens options including clear, sun, transition and prescription.
