Forget 64MP Phone Cameras, Samsung Just Launched A 108MP Smartphone Camera Sensor
Samsung in collaboration with Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has created the worlds first 108-megapixel camera sensor. Dubbed Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX it is the first sensor on a smartphone to go over 100 million pixels. This is also the first mobile image sensor to adopt a large 1/133-inch size.
Just when you thought a 64-megapixel camera on a smartphone would be too much, Samsung, in collaboration with Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, has created the world's first 108-megapixel camera sensor.
Samsung
Dubbed Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX, it is the first sensor on a smartphone to go over 100 million pixels. Moreover, it features a similar 0.8¦Ìm size as the one seen on the recently unveiled 64-megapixel ISOCELL sensors that will be coming on the teased Realme and Redmi phones.
This is also the first mobile image sensor to adopt a large 1/1.33-inch size, As per Samsung the HMX can absorb more light in darker situations when compared with smaller sensors seen on various phones today.
It uses the same pixel-merging Tetracell technology that let's the sensor simulate big-pixel sensors, producing 27-megapixel images. In well-lit situations, the sensor's Smart-ISO feature automatically selects the ISO levels as per the light in the frame, resulting in accurate light-to-electric signal conversion and improve pixel saturation to produce colourful images.
When in dark conditions, Smart-ISO uses a higher ISO level while making sure the noise isn't overpowering, resulting in clearer imagery.
The new Samsung sensor brings something never-seen-before on a smartphone camera sensor before, even in the video department. For video, the ISOCELL HMX supports video recording in up to 6K resolutions up to 6K at 30-frames-per-second.
Just last week both Xiaomi and Redmi teased the launch of their upcoming smartphones to feature a 64-megapixel cameras, both using Samsung's ISOCELL GW1 sensor. While there is no information about this yet, considering the Xiaomi-Samsung collab, the newly launched ISOCELL HMX, on the other can be expected to be seen on a Xiaomi flagship device soon, maybe the Mi 10?
It'll be really interesting to see what how does the sensor truly perform. Until then, it is safe to presume that it'll click some crispy-as-hell images with the ginormous 108-megapixel sensor.
