'Hologram Doctors' Successfully Treat Astronauts Aboard International Space Station
To project their 3D versions to astronauts aboard the ISS, doctors used Microsoft's Hololens Kinect camera and a computer running on AEXA software
Aren't holograms super cool? We agree, and so does NASA! Turns out, hologram doctors may be deployed to ease medical consultations aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
According to a NASA press release, a hologram medical team was "holoported" to the ISS in late 2021. For this purpose, NASA used technology developed by a startup called AEXA Aerospace and tech biggie Microsoft.

After this event, these holoported doctors have become among the first people to project their 3D selves into outer space.
Ą°This is completely new manner of human communication across vast distances,Ąą NASA flight surgeon Dr. Josef Schmid, one of the doctors to holoport, said in a statement.

In addition, NASA called it a "brand-new way of human exploration" wherein "our human entity is able to travel off the planet." This was the first event-of-its-kind, for hologram doctors were only imagined in Star Wars and Star Trek until now. Microsoft has been working on holograms since 2016, Futurism reported.

How do hologram doctors work?
To project their 3D versions to astronauts aboard the ISS, doctors used Microsoft's Hololens Kinect camera and a computer running on AEXA software. The doctors then chatted with European Space Agency's (ESA) astronaut Thomas Pesquet - yep, the same dude who used to share mindblowing glimpses of Earth from space during his time aboard the ISS.

As longer space journeys aimed at the Moon and Mars become reality, such hologram tech could be imperative in maintaining the well-being of astronauts with limited access to medical resources on a spaceship.

According to Futurism, AEXA intends to develop more augmented reality and virtual reality tools to facilitate holoporting. We can't wait for our sci-fi dreams to come true very soon.
