Microsoft Windows 11 Will Come As A Free Update: How To Download Windows 11

Microsoft has finally announced that its most recent version of Windows -- Windows 11 -- will start rolling out to users starting October 5th.

The new OS will be a free update for existing Windows 10 users and will ship with new hardware that you purchase starting this year.

While most of us would be excited to try out what the new flavour of Windows has to offer, it is important to note that this update will happen in phases. The newer devices with the recently-launched hardware will receive the upgrade first and this will be followed by in-market devices in the coming weeks and months.

According to Aaron Woodman, general manager of Windows marketing at Microsoft, all eligible devices are expected to receive the free upgrade for Windows 11 by mid-2022.

How to check for Windows 11 update?

In order to check if your PC is one of the first computers in line to get Windows 11, simply head to Settings by hitting the Start button and clicking the gear icon. Next, look for the Updates and Security option on the bottom right.

Here, under the Windows Update section, click on Check for Updates. If your computer is eligible, it will let you know.

Not all Windows 10 machines are compatible for Windows 11

Windows 11 is restricted to CPUs that support TPM 2.0 and have Secure Boot enabled. CPUs running Intel¡¯s Core processors (7th generation onwards) and AMD Ryzen Zen 1 CPUs. To make sure your CPU has made the cut, you can check the list of compatible processors here.

Alternatively, you can also use Microsoft¡¯s PC Health Check app to check for eligibility, which you can download and install from here.

After installing, click on the Windows 11 banner on top and within seconds it¡¯ll tell you if your system is compatible with Windows 11 update.

It isn¡¯t sure if older CPUs will be added to the supported list anytime soon. Windows 10 will remain in support until 2025.
