Elon Musk Teases New Twitter Features Including Voice Calls And Encrypted DMs
Elon Musk, the tech mogul has said that Twitter could add new features like voice calling and encrypted messages very soon
Elon Musk took over Twitter last year and promised to make radical changes to the way one of the world's most used platforms operates. He started with a revamped (and mostly irksome) verification system, and recently stated that inactive accounts would be booted off the platform to open up more usernames.
Now, Elon Musk's "everything app" vision might be coming closer to fruition. The tech mogul has said that Twitter could add new features like voice calling and encrypted messages very soon.
Encryption is coming to Twitter
End-to-end encryption is a staple feature of most messaging platforms these days, and it only makes sense for Twitter to add this extra layer of security to its direct messaging feature.
With latest version of app, you can DM reply to any message in the thread (not just most recent) and use any emoji reaction.

"Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number," Musk said in a Tweet on Tuesday.

When Musk pitched Twitter 2.0 last year, he also made passing references to long-form tweets and the ability to make payments on the platform.
With calling abilities, Twitter would become more like other social media platforms, especially the Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram. While Musk mentioned that DMs would get the end-to-end encryption treatment, it's unclear if the calls would be encrypted too.
Just yesterday, Musk announced a change in how Twitter deals with inactive accounts. While he didn't mention what constitutes an active account, Musk said that inactive accounts will be removed and/or archived. No other specifics were offered, in classic Musk style.

According to Twitter's policy, users ought to log in to their account at least once every 30 days to avoid permanent removal due to prolonged inactivity.
