South Korean electronics giant Samsung isn¡¯t doing so good today as the company¡¯s heir Jay Y. Lee was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for being convicted for bribery charges.
Reported first by Bloomberg, Jay Y. Lee was first jailed in the year 2017 when his role was revealed in a corruption scandal that even led to the nation¡¯s former president Park Geun-Hye from stepping down.
During the initial arrest, he spent a year in prison and was released in February 2018 after his original term of five years was halved and suspended. However, the Supreme Court of the nation went ahead and overturned this verdict, ordering a retrial in 2019.
The crimes of Samsung's heir
The Samsung heir was accused of offering horses and payments to a friend of the former president to gain support for his formal succession at the electronics company. The Supreme Court granted a 20-year prison term for Park last week, on a variety of charges including bribery connected to Samsung.
The announcement of the prison sentence for Lee didn¡¯t resonate well with the stock market as shares of Samsung Electronics came crashing more than four percent, moments after the sentence was readout.
Just last week, Samsung announced its newest line of devices under the S lineup -- the Galaxy S21, S21 Plus and S21 Ultra, starting at a price tag of Rs 69,999. While the US variants of the CPU get Snapdragon 888 CPU, in India, they¡¯re powered by an Exynos 2100 5nm CPU paired with Mali G78 MP14 GPU and up to 16GB of RAM.
Moreover, the S21 and the S21 Plus offer a full-HD display with up to 120Hz refresh rate, whereas the S21Ultra is the only variant that gets a QHD panel, also with a 120Hz refresh rate.
At the back, S21 and S21 Plus get a similar triple camera array with a 12-megapixel primary shooter, 64-megapixel telephoto shooter and a third 12-megapixel ultra-wide shooter.
The S21 Ultra, on the other hand, gets a 108-megapixel primary shooter, a 10-megapixel periscope telephoto shooter, a third 10-megapixel telephoto shooter and a fourth 12-megapixel ultrawide shooter.
