After Facebook, Satya Nadella Shares Microsoft's Vision Of A Digital Metaverse
Microsoft's metaverse plans are in full swing after Facebook confirmed its name change to Meta recently. Here's what Satya Nadella said
After Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook's name change to Meta in a bid to reflect metaverse ambitions, Microsoft's Satya Nadella recently shared his vision for the metaverse - the future iteration of the internet and social media.
"The metaverse is not only transforming how we see the world but how we participate in it,¡± Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Tweeted on Wednesday. In the accompanying video clip, Nadella announced - "As the digital and physical worlds come together, we are creating an entirely new platform layer, which is the metaverse."
Enter, Microsoft Mesh
With Microsoft's "Mesh" platform, the company is confirming its seat at the metaverse table. A collaborative platform to enable virtual experiences, for starters, Mesh will will allow users of Microsoft Teams to have an immersive experience.

With artificial intelligence acting as the fuel for Mesh on Teams, the animated avatars representing each user are able to mimic the voice of each person using machine learning. Microsoft believes this tool will especially be helpful for new recruits that join companies remotely, as is now the norm.

The Mesh experience will be extended to almost all primary Microsoft products, including Powerpoint. In the future, Mesh is expected to be integrated with Microsoft 365 suite of products.
The most common misconception about metaverse is that it'll operate how our current apps do - in individual capacity. Instead, it's more like the Apple App Store or Google Play Store on which different apps will operate and interact with each other. Perhaps the best example of a metaverse is the animated film "Ralph Breaks The Internet."
