Guy Built AI Tool To Sharpen His DadĄ¯s Old Photo, And It Works Like Magic
A guy from the US recently used an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to restore an old picture of his father and the result is mind-blowing
Artificial intelligence has the power to change everything we know. From supercomputers that run on AI algorithms to robots that can perform basic tasks to make our lives easier, AI is going to pervade almost all arenas of our mundane lives.

In the meantime, individual researchers and developers are using purpose-drive artificial intelligence programmes to pursue their personal goals - be it the highest-ever score on Tetris or simply restoring old images that are fuzzy.
Making old images crystal clear using AI
Murilo Gustineli, a data scientist from Insight recently used an AI algorithm to restore an extremely old image of his father.
The blind face restoration algorithm is called "GFP-GAN." According to Gustineli, the programme "leverages the generative face prior in a pre-trained GAN to restore realistic faces while preserving fidelity."

Gustineli also explained what blind face restoration is in a LinkedIn post. Essentially, blind face restoration is aimed at images that have undergone degradation for whatever reasons, including low-resolution, blur, noise, compression artifacts and other factors.
GFP-GAN turns these relics of a bygone era into high-quality images. If Gustineli's image restored image is any proof, the algorithm can do wonders to ageing images.
According to Gustineli, the "Generative Facial Prior (GFP) is incorporated into the face restoration process via channel-split spatial feature transform layers, which allow for a good balance between realness and fidelity."

In simple words - it works! "The results are amazing," Gustineli wrote on LinkedIn.
