South Korea, the country with the highest average broadband download speeds in the world, is about to make its Internet even faster.
The country¡®s Ministry of Science and ICT executed a public order on Monday, for projects related to 10Gb gigabit internet. The ministry has said it will work closely with local IT firms to adopt 10Gb services, the core of next-generation wireless technology. It¡¯s expected to choose up to two organisations to award up to approximately $877,000 in financial support by April 10.
At least three telcos, KT, LG Uplus, and SK Broadband are planning to roll out 10Gb internet for customers as early as May this year. KT so far has had limited deployment of 10Gb connections in major cities Seoul and Pyeongchang since 2016. The government ministry will also be attempting to find hardware providers to speed up the rate at which telcos can adopt the new technology.
¡°The ministry hopes to achieve competitiveness in the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) industry by successfully commercializing 10Gb Internet through close cooperation between the private and public sectors,¡± a ministry official said. The country is aiming for 50 percent coverage of 10Gb internet by 2022.

The United States has the highest share with 56.4 million having gigabit Internet available, while Singapore currently has the highest proportion of 95 percent covered.
