However, did you know, that Steve Jobs, who led the development of the first iPhone didn't want the device to have a SIM card slot.
Reported first by TOI, this was revealed in a recent interview at a Computer History Museum special event by former iPod VP, Tony Fadell, who is also referred to as the ¡®Father of the iPod¡¯. He revealed that Jobs was in fact very much against the idea of the iPhone having a SIM card slot.
According to Fadell, Steve Jobs told the engineers, ¡°We don¡¯t want another hole in it¡±. In fact, he wanted the device to possess a CDMA network instead of GSM in order to eliminate the card slot. To the unaware, phones that supported CDMA didn¡¯t need a SIM card slot as they could directly connect to the service provider's network.

Based on rumours and leaks, future iPhone models -- specifically the iPhone 15 could actually become the first in the line to be launched without a SIM card and instead harness eSIM technology.

In fact, several reports have pointed out that Apple has already advised carriers across the world to expect eSIM-only iPhones to be unveiled soon. eSIM allows for a user to activate another connection on to the device without physically inserting a SIM card. This can be activated by the service provider upon request of the customer.
The first phone to support eSIM tech was the iPhone XS, XS Max as well as the budget XR. The newer iPhone 11, 12 and the 13 series support eSIM allowing the phone to perform just like a dual-SIM phone.
