Apple-1 Computer Hand-Made By Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak To Be Auctioned Today

The first hand-built Apple computer created by founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak is going up for auction today.

Reported first by AFP, the 45-year-old computer is dubbed Apple-1 and is still functioning like it did on the very first day and is expected to fetch up to $600,000 -- around 4.44 crores -- at an auction in California.

Also known as the ¡®Chaffey College¡¯ Apple-1, this is just one of the 200 that were made by the tech visionaries in the beginning of the company¡¯s journey from the garage to the Cupertino giant it has become today.

The computer has been created using the rare and premium koa wood -- a richly patinated wood that originates in Hawaii. Both Jobs and Wozniak sold Apple-1s as component parts, however, a computer store decided to take things to the next level by encasing it in the premium wood for delivery of around 50 units.

Apple-1 expert Corey Cohen said in a statement to the LA Times, This is kind of the holy grail for vintage electronics and computer tech collectors. That really makes it exciting for a lot of people."

Getting auctioned at John Moran Auctioneers, the device is equipped with a 1986 Panasonic video monitor and has only been used by two other owners in the device¡¯s lifecycle. The auction house listing revealed that it was first purchased by an electronics professor at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, California who later sold it to his student in 1977.

As per the report, the student (who has not been named) paid around $650 for the Apple-1, and now it looks like the student is looking at a handsome sum for this computer.

To put things in perspective, in 2014, a working Apple-1 was sold by Bonhams for over $900,000 (or around Rs 6.66 crores).
