Tata Group In Talks With Wistron To Assemble Apple iPhones In India: Report

India's Tata Group is reportedly in talks with Wistron Corp., a Taiwanese supplier, to set up a manufacturing venture in India. If the discussions bear fruit, Tata Group could be assembling future iPhones in India.

According to Bloomberg, this is part of Tata Group's push to embrace technology manufacturing by tapping Wistron's expertise in development of products, supply chain and assembly.

Apple is already eyeing India as a hub for iPhone production. In 2017, the company began assembling iPhones in India via Wistron and later with Foxconn. The report adds that it's unclear whether Apple is aware of the talks.

So what could happen?

If the plan goes through, Tata Group will buy equity in Wistron's India operations. The companies could also collectively set up a new assembly plant in India, or both of these scenarios could happen.

While the deal is not finalised yet, Tatas could amass a share of Wistron's manufacturing business even beyond smartphones, Bloomberg said. If the deal is successful, it could make Tata the first Indian company to make iPhones. Most iPhones are currently manufactured by Taiwanese giants Wistron and Foxconn.

Tata Group's potential role in iPhone assembly could help others take India more seriously as a potential manufacturing hub. China's extreme Covid-19 lockdowns have caused massive disruptions to the supply chain of electronics over the last two years.

Apple, too, is looking to diversify its production chain with focus on Asian countries like India and Vietnam. Even then, Apple runs a tight ship - with tight deadlines and strict quality control.
