With Apple¡¯s annual WWDC event just around the corner, we can expect to see the debut of the new iOS version 12 out in public. It¡¯s expected to become a more streamlined version of what iOS 11 was. However, one particular expected feature that¡¯s gaining attention is one that¡¯ll make you put down your iPhone.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple will show off a new feature for iOS 12 called ¡°Digital Health¡±. In essence, this will be a set of tools and features aimed at helping people keep track of how much they¡¯re using their phone and how long they¡¯re in each app. Basically, it¡¯s a way to combat the plague of smartphone that¡¯s been gradually creeping up on us these past few years.
For some time now, the general consensus, especially among many parents, is that smartphones are being made so attractive, that apps are being made so engaging, that they¡¯re hard to put down. Of course, that¡¯s the ideal scenario for a company that makes its money this way, but many people believe major tech companies need to look beyond this and concern themselves with the general well-being of their consumers.
Earlier this year in fact, two major Apple shareholders warned the company that an addiction to the iPhone could hinder the developmental processes of kids using the device, and urged them to make efforts to counter this. Google was the first to take that step, having announced a suit of features in the upcoming Android P that help monitor and control your smartphone use. Even Instagram recently announced it¡¯s bringing in a tool that will let you see just how much time you¡¯re spending in the app.
It¡¯s still not clear what capabilities the Digital Health tool will possess, but it¡¯ll likely be similar to Google¡¯s offering. You can also almost certainly expect it in the form of parental control as well, secured by a pass code or Face ID.
