Twitter Founder Jack Dorsey's New Social Platform 'Bluesky' Now On App Store
Initially, Bluesky was pitched to the world as a "decentralised social network." In 2019, it was essentially an extended arm of Twitter but became an independent company last year.
A new social media app is in town! This one is called Bluesky and is created by Jack Dorsey, the founder and former CEO of Twitter. On Tuesday, Bluesky launched its beta test on the Apple app store.
Initially, Bluesky was pitched to the world as a "decentralised social network." In 2019, it was essentially an extended arm of Twitter but became an independent company last year. On Twitter, Bluesky had written at that time - "Both Twitter and Bluesky realized that our independence is important to the success of the project, which is why we established an independent company to ensure that we serve the broadest possible interests."
Twitter's funding of Bluesky is not subject to any conditions except one: that Bluesky is to research and develop technologies that enable open and decentralized public conversation.

What is BlueSky about?
If you wish to access Bluesky, you would have to get on the waiting list via the website. Then, the beta version of the app may be download from the app store - invite-only!
It appears that Bluesky is a lot like Twitter, as TechCrunch reported. It asks "what's up?" instead of "what's happening" with a character limit of 256 characters and a simpler option to add images. Just like Twitter, it allows users to see updates on the Home timeline with different feeds for just "posts" and "posts and replies."
Sounds exactly like Twitter, right? It probably was supposed to be that way. Dorsey first came up with the idea for Bluesky when Twitter banned former US president Donald Trump. Just like Elon Musk, Dorsey perceives content moderation differently. He had said at that time in a Tweet that moderation efforts "can't erode a free and open global internet."
Yes, we all need to look critically at inconsistencies of our policy and enforcement. Yes, we need to look at how our service might incentivize distraction and harm. Yes, we need more transparency in our moderation operations. All this can¡¯t erode a free and open global internet.

In 2021, Dorsey said the following on Twitter - "We are trying to do our part by funding an initiative around an open decentralized standard for social media."
We are trying to do our part by funding an initiative around an open decentralized standard for social media. Our goal is to be a client of that standard for the public conversation layer of the internet. We call it @bluesky: https://t.co/51or6OuNNv
