Twitter has lost about a million of its monthly active users over the last month, and it could lose millions more. That¡¯s because the platform is cracking down on bots and spam accounts. Unfortunately for them, a lot of those spam bots account for their user numbers.
Monthly active users is the measure of an app or online service¡¯s growth and success. For Twitter, that number was 336 million last quarter, and it¡¯s dropped to 335 million this quarter. And according to company representatives, they could lose ¡°mid-single-digit millions¡± more over the next few months.
The warning yesterday was part of Twitter¡¯s second quarter earnings report for 2018. Technically Twitter hasn¡¯t lost any real users because all those accounts were fake to begin with. However, it¡¯s a very real blow to investor faith, seeing as they thought the company was more successful than it is.
Yeah, it doesn¡¯t look great for Twitter, but this is actually a good thing for us and the platform as a whole. Fewer bots means less spam and fewer phishing attempts. For Twitter, that also means less of the bad publicity that sort of stuff brings, for instance, reports on Russian bots posting to sway US elections.
In the meantime though, it will hit Twitter had, as evidenced by the 16 per cent hit their stock took post the announcement.
