Alcohol Abuse Can Reduce 24-28 Years From Life Span, Study Finds
The study looked at data from over 1,158,486, Europeans has revealed that people with alcohol-use-disorder could be looking at losing not just years but in fact decades off their lives.
It is no secret that alcohol is not good for us. There are people who boast consuming tons of it on a daily basis.
But they are also the people who come across severe long-term medical issues -- whether it¡¯s poor cardiac health or issues with liver etc. And now, a new study has shed light on how drastically it can reduce a person¡¯s life expectancy.
The study looked at data from over 1,158,486, Europeans has revealed that people with alcohol-use-disorder could be looking at losing not just years but in fact decades off their lives.
The study was conducted by Karolinska Institutet in Sweden which looked at individuals from Denmark, Finland and Sweden who were hospitalised due to an alcohol user disorder from the year 1987 to 2006.
After looking at the numbers, researchers discovered that individuals who were hospitalised for alcohol abuse disorder, on average saw a 24-28 year decrease in overall life expectancy -- considerably higher than the general population. The study revealed that substance use disorder was responsible for spiking the chances of mortality from all causes of death.
The average life expectancy of individuals hospitalized for substance use disorder is 53 years old, while women have an average life expectancy of 58 years old. According to the World Bank, average life expectancy for citizens in India is somewhere around 69 years, as per data from 2018.
This is not surprising since drinking alcohol regularly has drastic effects on not just our liver, but also the heart and the cardiovascular system, resulting in medical conditions like irregular heartbeat, stroke and other complications. But looking at a considerable loss of years in a life span surely put things in an entirely different perspective.
So next time your friends force you to chug beers one after another, keep the effects in mind and drink responsibly to keep enjoying your beloved drink for years to come.
