EU Climate Change Law Will Enforce CO2 Emission Cuts To Save Our Earth

Our unsustainable way of life is under threat, not just due to COVID-19 pandemic, but also by damage caused by humans, including global warming and climate change.

Carbon emissions have gone up so much so that even the coldest regions of our planet are as hot as tropical regions.

Organisations have been demanding authorities and governments around the world to enforce practices that limit the release of CO2 and other pollutants in the atmosphere and help reduce the damage caused to the environment and it looks like European Union will be the first to do this.

EU has announced that it hopes to strike a deal on climate change law this year. EU had proposed a law in March to make a legally binding agreement for the nations who are a part of the EU to cut down green gas emissions to zero by the year 2050.

Reuters asked EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson if a law could be agreed by this year, to which he responded, stating, ¡°I do have great hopes, and I do see a big ambition also from the European Parliament¡¯s side. There are all the necessary conditions to achieve agreement,¡± she told an online event. ¡°The chance is there.¡±

The law needs to be greenlit by the Commission, EU Governments as well as the EU Parliament. Once done, the climate change law will put EU right on track towards its long-term goal of zero emissions by the year 2050.

¡°We cannot take the risk of delaying the climate law, as all other packages will also be delayed,¡± according to Pascal Canfin, chair of the environment committee of the European Parliament.

He claims that latest the negotiations can get pushed is till February as any later will cause a disruption in the series of emissions-cutting policies that are on schedule for next summer which include a review of the EU carbon market, novel energy-saving rules as well as vehicle CO2 standards.
