Humanity hasn't thrived in a similar manner as it does today. In fact, it was something almost unheard of, around a century or even half a century ago.

However, in case you wanted to learn what the global population was like when you were born, there is a site that can pinpoint exactly that -- WorldPopulationHistory.org.

All you need to do is add your date of birth and within seconds it¡¯ll draw a chart for you that would show you the population at the time of your birth and the growth from that date till today, giving you a clear picture of the leap taken by the human population.

When I tested this out for the year 1994 (the year I was born), I was approximately 5,695,989,071st humans to be alive on this planet at the time. While the site does list a bunch of sources to support this estimate, I'll definitely recommend you take this with a pinch of salt. But it¡¯s still fascinating to think about it nonetheless.

Growth of global population

During the early days of the 20th century, the global population numbers were maxing out 1,650 Million, (source), however in 5 decades, i.e by 1950, the global population was around 2,536 million.

Even in India in the year 1901, the population was around 23 crores, according to Indian census data. This was primarily due to the limit in the advancement in the field of medicine, followed by political turmoil that reduced the life expectancy of individuals to a far lower number.

However, post World War II, humanity started focussing their efforts on advancing science, whether it was in the field of medicine that brought in cure and treatments of several diseases which at the time were considered untreatable, or taking humanity to space, among other kinds of advancements.

Even India, post-independence, saw considerable growth in population numbers with 36 crores around the year 1951 and crossing 1 billion in the next 50, in the year 2001. The population in India is around 1.32 billion.

And today, with a global population of over 7 billion (we crossed the 7 billion thresholds in 2011), we¡¯re going stronger than ever, while causing a massive dent in the resources of our planet and causing irreversible damage at the same time.
