Delhi weather alert: IMD predicts rain, winds and thunderstorms for two days
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Delhi weather, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds over the next two days. Residents are advised to stay alert and take safety steps as the weather may cause disruption.

Delhi weather alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Delhi weather alert, upgrading the earlier yellow alert to an orange alert for Friday. According to IMD, the national capital is likely to experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h over the next two days, as reported in TOI.
The orange alert means people should stay prepared for bad weather that might cause damage or disruption. ¡°Residents must stay alert and take precautions,¡± said an IMD spokesperson. The alert is meant to inform the public about potentially dangerous weather conditions that can affect daily life.
What¡¯s the Difference Between Yellow and Orange Alerts?
A yellow alert is a cautionary warning, suggesting people should be aware of changing weather. However, the orange alert indicates more serious conditions like strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rain that can interrupt traffic, flights, and even power supply.
The IMD had first issued a yellow alert for Delhi but later upgraded it as conditions worsened.

Though there was no alert for Thursday morning, light to moderate rain was still predicted. ¡°There may be some light rain now. However, the rain is expected to become heavier on Friday,¡± added the IMD official.
While Delhi is under the orange alert, nearby areas like Gurgaon and Faridabad haven¡¯t received any similar warning. However, places like Noida and Ghaziabad might see light rain and thunderstorms, though there is no colour-coded alert for these cities.
Delhi Sees Record-Breaking Rainfall in May
This month, Delhi weather has been unusually wet. The city has already recorded 186.4 mm of rainfall, the highest May rainfall ever. The previous record was 165 mm in May 2008, while the average for May is just 30.7 mm.
Such a sudden rise in rain and thunderstorm activity has left many residents surprised and concerned about the capital's ability to handle such weather alerts.
Storms Disrupt Life in Delhi
Last Sunday, Delhi's weather took a rough turn, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds disrupting the city. The sudden storm caused flight delays, power cuts, waterlogging, and even uprooted trees across several areas. Monday brought more light rain, and similar wet weather is expected to continue through the week.
This month alone, five major storms have hit Delhi and the NCR, resulting in at least 12 deaths caused by house collapses, electric shocks, and falling trees.
Monsoon Likely to Arrive Early This Year
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is making faster progress than usual. While it normally reaches Delhi around June 27, the IMD has not yet confirmed the exact arrival date for this year. However, officials said they are closely tracking the monsoon's progress.
Interestingly, the monsoon reached Kerala on May 24, a week ahead of the usual date of June 1, and Mumbai on May 26, well before its usual June 11 arrival.
Stay Prepared and Updated
Residents are advised to stay alert, follow weather updates regularly, and take safety measures during this period of the Delhi weather alert. Avoid open areas during thunderstorms, and keep emergency numbers handy in case of power outages or fallen trees.
With more rain, winds, and thunderstorms expected, people in Delhi should remain cautious as the city continues to deal with extreme weather conditions and the early onset of monsoon-like systems.
