If you are active on social media you would have already scene the viral video of a crab smoking a cigarette on a beach, apparently. Sounds unbelievable but it is what it is: A crab smoking a lit cigarette.
For those unaware, the video has now been shared by multiple Twitter handles including that of IFS Susanta Nanda with the caption, ¡®Cancer taking a cancerous puff. This is like a bad dream. Our wastage being picked by crab. We can spoil any ecosystem with our attitude¡¯.

We as humans are unimaginably irresponsible and narrow-minded to be damaging the very planet we are living in....
The consequences are going to be very severe if this goes on....
Worst. Nightmare. Ever.
And people are sharing on WhatsApp as if it's a joke... Not at all serious about the things they are doing which is harmful to the nature and wildlife...

It appears to me that someone has purposely tried to see the fun by throwing a lit cigarette. Not a good sign.

Last year, in a similar incident involving a cigarette butt an image of a mother bird feeding it to her little one went viral.
Karen Mason is a volunteer for the National Audonon Society and a photographer. She was the one who captured the heartbreaking picture of a mama bird feeding her baby a cigarette butt and naturally, it went viral and made people realise the need to stop littering cigarette butts on the beach.

A campaign by San Diego State University Graduate School of Public Health found out that a large percentage of the 5.5 trillion filter cigarettes are thrown somewhere in the environment every year. A report also found that cigarette butts, not plastic straws, are a bigger threat to our oceans.
We should not just be scared for the wildlife. Cigarette butts on beaches can be harmful for kids too who might pick them up. Reportedly Mason said that if it was not for the volunteers cleaning up Florida beeches, they would be completely full of trash.

The least that one can do is to dispose of cigarette butts in the garbage. As the world tries to move towards the idea of a plastic free existence, it is important to acknowledge other harmful materials that are adversely affecting the wildlife and nature.
