From Helpline Numbers To Prayers, Here's How People Are Extending Support After Glacier Burst In Uttarakhand
The avalanche struck near a power project site at Raini village in Chamoli district. The water level in the Dhauliganga river rose to a dangerous level following the avalanche. Preliminary reports suggest that there has been heavy damage and loss of lives due to the breaking of the Tapovan- Vishnugad dam.
A massive flood in the Dhauliganga river was reported near a village in Uttarakhand¡¯s Chamoli district, prompting authorities to launch a search and rescue operation and sounding an alert in all the districts downstream up to Haridwar, reports ANI.
Disaster response teams have been deployed to conduct search-and-rescue and relief operations. The Army has committed four columns and three helicopters are already operating.
Around 100 to 150 people may have been killed, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Om Prakash told news agency ANI. Authorities fear hundreds more may still be stuck. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in Assam to campaign for Assembly polls, tweeted: "India stands with Uttarakhand and the nation prays for everyone's safety."
