Nephology makes for an interesting subject for anyone trying to understand cloud formations and cloud types. While technically it's a way to understand earth's atmosphere, keen-eyed laymen often look at these fluffy white objects in the sky too for good ol' fun including finding shapes from everyday life. But there are moments when we see things that don't make sense and the viewer is left wondering about the why or how. Kinda like this recent video of a mysterious UFO-like cloud formation spotted over Cape Town in South Africa. Here's what happened.

The now-viral clip shows an almost inverted tornado-looking, mysterious UFO-like, angry red cloud formation in skies over Cape Town, South Africa. Cars can be seen moving about unbothered while the cloud hangs in the sky in an almost foreboding manner. There appear to be two bright lights on either side of the red cloud but they are most likely street lights, like the third one featured in gradual frames.
In the 12-second-long video, the cloud never once moves or changes shape. It's unclear if it eventually faded away or how long it took to do so if it did. This video is a reminder of how nature loves to play the artists sometimes and isn't always ready to give us viewers answers. But before you jump to conclusions, most experts, like informed readers in the comments section, will confirm this isn't an alien spaceship. It's most likely an lenticular cloud that are apparently pretty common.

The video shared on X by @amazingnature raked in a million views, 3,700 likes and comments to match. The caption read: "Spotted over the skies of Cape Town, South Africa. What do you think it is?"
"It's a Lenticular cloud. They form when the air is stable and winds blow across hills and mountains from the same or similar direction at different heights. They look like an alien spaceship in disguise..." explained one informed user. "This is a type of earthquake cloud. It is loaded with petrol and iron oxide dust from the tail of Nibiru-planet X," attempted a second. "What in the jumped up jambalaya is that!??! That cannot be real," a third chimed in.
