HMPV virus in India: First case reported in Bengaluru; experts list symptoms you should not ignore

The first case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been detected in India as an eight-month-old baby tested positive for the virus. Following this two more cases have been detected in infants in Bengaluru and Gujarat.

Amid the ongoing spike in cases in China, this makes the first case in India. According to a report of News18, the child does not have any travel history, despite the fact that the child tested positive. The case has been confirmed by the Karnataka Health Department and was reportedly conveyed to the Union Health Ministry. However, according to the report, it was not clear whether this was the same lineage of the HMPV virus that wreaked havoc in China.

The Union Health Ministry earlier said that India is completely prepared to manage respiratory illnesses with proper surveillance mechanisms. They also indicated that there was no unusual surge in cases so far. On the other hand, the situation in China is being closely monitored through all available channels, and the Union Health Ministry has also requested the World Health Organization (WHO) to share timely updates regarding the same.

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a type of respiratory virus that is similar to the symptoms of the flu. Dr. Samir Garde, Director of the Dept. of Pulmonology and Lung Transplant, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, warns that individuals with weaker immunity, including children and the elderly, are at higher risk for the virus.

HMPV is commonly spread through respiratory droplets when an infected individual coughs, sneezes or touches anything.

Is human metapneumovirus (HMPV) deadly?

HMPV can cause severe pneumonia. Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is very common in India, especially after COVID-19. According to Dr. Amit Gupta, Senior Neonatologist & Paediatrician, Motherhood Hospitals, Noida, "Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) mainly affects individuals who are immunocompromised or are under the age of 14 years."

Along with the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza viruses, and others, the Indian molecular panel has detected HMPV as a common cause of respiratory viruses. "This virus can even cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections and can exacerbate pre-existing conditions like bronchitis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), or asthma," adds Dr. Gupta

Symptoms of HMPV virus

Symptoms of HMPV virus can include:

• Fever
• Constant coughing
• Runny nose
• Sore throat
• Shortness of breath
• Wheezing
• Fatigue.

Preventive measures to stay safe against HMPV virus

As one case has been detected in India, people should stay vigilant, says Dr. Garde. He advises following safety measures like maintaining proper hygiene by frequently washing their hands, wearing masks in crowded places, and maintaining distance from the ones who are sick or infected.
