According to the most recent data from those countries, the death toll from the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria has risen to almost 5,000.
Hundreds of rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and debris, attempting to dig out survivors, despite the frigid temperatures. According to authorities, the death toll from Monday's earthquake and its aftershocks is expected to rise. Shallow temperatures and heavy snowfall have hit both Turkey and Syria.
Syria's final resistance stronghold and government-held territory surround the earthquake's epicenter.
In rebel-controlled areas, there are reportedly still hundreds of families buried under the rubble.
People said that thousands of buildings had fallen in a large area that stretched from the Syrian towns of Aleppo and Hama to the Turkish city of Diyarbakir, which is more than 330 kilometers to the northeast.
At least 1,823 people were killed and thousands injured in Syria following several deadly earthquakes and aftershocks in neighboring Turkey, authorities and rescuers said on Tuesday.
State news agency SANA said at least 812 people were killed and 1,449 injured in the government-held provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama, Idlib, and Tartous.
At least 1,020 people were killed and 2,400 injured in Syria¡¯s opposition-held northwest, with the death toll expected to "rise dramatically," the White Helmets rescue team said.
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and neighboring Syria early Monday, toppling thousands of buildings, including many apartment blocks, wrecking hospitals, and leaving thousands of people injured or homeless.
