Coronavirus pandemic has brought daily lives to halt all around the world. The rich and the middle class can somehow manage to survive a global emergency like this; the worst affected are the poor and the elderly who cannot always fend for themselves.
Amidst this outbreak there are those who have been trying to take advantage by hoarding sanitisers and other essentials but the pandemic has also seen people coming out in large numbers to help those in need.
A restaurant in Leeds, Bengal Cottage, is run by one such group of people who have been extending their kindness to the elderly.
The restaurant is providing the elderly with free rice, curry and rolls who are unavailable in most supermarkets. The owner of the curry house Mohammed Saheb Miah, in the village of Micklefield, promises to have his offer open ¡®every day until the virus disappears.'
Talking about what made him do this, he told Metro UK, ¡°I used my first-hand experience of poverty and started helping those who need a hand as I think that the government help is simply not enough. So far we¡¯ve had a great response, many can¡¯t afford basic toiletries, the elderly who are isolated, have little if any family members struggle to cook meals hence being the only eatery in the village I have decided to cook and provide food for them for free,¡± he was quoted as saying.
Many suppliers have increased the prices of basic items which many people are unable to afford. So Mohammed and his time bought a bunch of them and delivered to elderly with their meals.
¡°With the recent price hike in local suppliers, it still hasn¡¯t stopped me from carrying on my gesture to all my elderly, it¡¯s more than just a business here at Bengal Cottage. We are one big Micklefield family! I will do whatever I can to support those around me in times of need,¡± Metro UK quoted him as saying.
It is great what Mohommed and his team is doing for the elderly who are known to be among the most vulnerable to coronavirus. Currently, it is safest for the elders of every community to stay indoors and we need more people like Mohommed and his team to help them when they are not capable to venture out and fend for themselves.
