Called Himveer For A Reason: ITBP Jawans Brave Stones On Snowy Slope To Protect Amarnath Yatris

To reach the cave shrine Amarnath is not easy but to make sure that the pilgrims reach there safely, the Himveers protected them from falling stones on a snowy slope.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is clearly called Himveer for a reason.

A video shared by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) shows the ITBP personnel braving a shower of stones on a snowy slope in order to shield and protect pilgrims on Baltal route.

Earlier today, ITBP administered oxygen to over 25 pilgrims who were suffering from breathlessness on the Baltal route. About 15 pilgrims were administered oxygen by the ITBP en-route Baltal axis on Wednesday.

The Amarnath Yatra began on July 1, the day of Masik Shivratri and will conclude on August 15, the day of Shravan Purnima. Nearly 17,000 pilgrims on Thursday paid obeisance at the naturally formed ice lingam in the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas.

He said the yatra is progressing smoothly and till date 50,483 pilgrims had the darshan of the 'shivling' at the holy cave. The yatra to the cave shrine commenced on Monday from both Baltal and Pahalgam routes in the Kashmir valley, according to PTI.

Multi-tier security arrangements have been made for the smooth and successful conduct of the yatra, which concludes on August 15.

As many as 2.85 lakh pilgrims had paid obeisance at the cave shrine last year, while the numbers were 3.52 lakh in 2015, 3.20 lakh in 2016 and 2.60 lakh in 2017.

But this is not the first time that the ITBP jawans have proved that they are extraordinary.

Months earlier, a video on ITBP's official Twitter account showed the jawans exercising in the snow, that too without any warm clothing whatsoever. The jawans are seen exercising sans shirts as snow continues to fall. While we complain about the cold, these brave men are training themselves for the worst.

The ITBP has been deployed to the icy heights of the Himalayas primarily from 9,000 to 18,750 feet where almost all the places offer bone-chilling cold throughout the year.
