Independence Day 2022: Rare Photos of 11 Freedom Fighters Who Dedicated Their Lives For India's Freedom

India will mark its 75 years of Independence on 15 August 2022. On this day, India got its freedom ending an almost 200-year British rule in the subcontinent.

On 15 August 1947, the first-time Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, hoisted the Indian national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi. From then on, every year, Independence Day is celebrated on 15 August.

Besides, 15 August is also commemorated as the anniversary of the partition of the subcontinent into two countries, India and Pakistan, which occurred at midnight on 14-15 August 1947 (In Pakistan, Independence Day is celebrated on 14 August.)

British rule in India began in 1757 when following the British victory at the Battle of Plassey, the English East India Company began exercising control over the country.

The East India Company ruled India for over 100 years until it was replaced by direct British rule in the wake of the Indian Mutiny (Indian Mutiny, also called Sepoy Mutiny or First War of Independence, widespread but unsuccessful rebellion against British rule in India) in 1857¨C58.

The Indian independence movement began during World War I and was led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who advocated for a peaceful and nonviolent end to British rule.

After a long battle for freedom, we are here celebrating Independence only due to the selfless sacrifices and headstrong commitment of our brave freedom fighters who were revolutionary in their approaches towards looking at independence.
