Kerala Man Builds A Unique Bed To Meet His Bedridden Father's Daily Needs

A 47-year-old non-resident Indian (NRI) was motivated to develop a revolutionary bed after seeing his bedridden father's challenges in obtaining a good night's rest without developing infections and sores.

Open Digest, a Kerala news website, reported that Australian resident Dileep Kumar developed and constructed the bed with the help of his house manager, Sadasivan Krishnankutty.

Kumar has no formal engineering training.

This guy worked hard to ease his mother's suffering, who takes care of his ailing father at their house in Alappuzha.

"After months of hard work, I finally made a bed with the features to enable a physically disabled patient to have a comfortable sleep on it and, if in need, can carry out primary needs on it. The bed also has the feature to wash, clean, and dry the patient without moving the patient off the bed, and that too at the press of a switch," Kumar said in Open Digest's Instagram post.

In July 2022, he began working on the model. He spent much time traveling throughout the country to understand the nuances of different mattresses better.

After receiving a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and dementia, his father Radhakrishna Pillai's health started to worsen rapidly.

His mother was hesitant to hire a nurse to take care of Pillai due to the financial burden it would entail.

"I wanted to give as much comfort for my dad when he is on the bed, which causes no discomfort to him. We stopped using diapers and removed the urine catheter as he can pass urine and stool in the lying position. He can be washed and cleaned on the bed by pressing a button. After I started using this bed, my dad¡¯s ongoing urinary tract infection got cured. I thank Sadasivan and others who helped me make such an innovative bed for my father," Kumar told Open Digest.
