A retired Indian Army general assembled a Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh Guru to bless his son and daughter-in-law at their wedding ceremony. It was a salute to the interfaith peace that pervades the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) unit, of which Lieutenant General Satish Dua was colonel.
Who got married with JALKI spirit?
Lt Gen Dua, who refers to it as the Mandir, Masjid, and Gurudwara (MMG) spirit, requested the "combined" blessings of the Dharm Gurus of the religions represented in his previous unit for the wedding couple who married over the weekend.
"In the true JAKLI Regiment spirit of MMG (Mandir, Masjid & Gurudwara) under one roof, my younger son got married on Sunday by the combined blessings of Pandit ji, Maulvi ji & Granthi ji," the officer announced in an X post.
What is JALKI spirit?
Lt Gen Dua was inspired by the JAKLI tradition of religious syncretism, in which officers of all grades and faiths gather to pray at the Sarv Dharm Sthal. The complex contains multiple sites, including a temple, mosque, Gurudwara, and church, all of which share a wall.
The commander, who married his eldest son in a similar ceremony in 2021, stated that no Christian priest or pastor was present at the wedding because none of his comrades represented the religion.
"The hallmark were baratees on bikes and the young couple being blessed by religious gurus of all religions, in true tradition of my JAKLI Regiment," he said.
Where did Lt Gen serve during his time?
Lt Gen Dua served as the Corps Commander in Kashmir during the 2016 Uri Surgical Strike. Throughout his 39-year tenure, the officer held various positions, including Chief of Integrated Defence Staff.
He is a highly decorated veteran who has received numerous accolades. After retirement, the general wrote the book 'India's Bravehearts'.
