Man Rides Scooter For 1,200 Km To Take Pregnant Wife To Exam Centre In Madhya Pradesh

Nothing was too big an obstacle for this Jharkhand man who drove over 1,200 km on a scooter with his pregnant wife, so that she could appear for an exam for aspiring teachers in Madhya Pradesh, reported Times of India.

The tribal couple - Dhananjay Kumar (27) and his wife Soni Hembram (22) - started travelling on a scooter from Ganta Tola village in Godda district of Jharkhand, to Gwalior - the centre for DEd (Diploma in Education) exam which is required to be cleared by those who want to become teachers.

Dhananjay wants to see his wife become a schoolteacher and that is what inspired him to take this long and tedious journey where he covered more than 1,200 km across four states and rode through rains as well as bad roads.

Since trains and buses are still not operational due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, the couple did not have any other option.

Kumar told TOI, "As trains, buses and other means of transport were not available, we decided to traverse the journey by road on our two-wheeler. My wife, who is pregnant, was initially reluctant to take this arduous journey. But after seeing my determination, she agreed for this long journey."

He added, "If I had hired a taxi for coming to Gwalior, it would have cost Rs 30,000 which was a big amount for me. Whatever little jewellery we have, we mortgaged it to raise Rs 10,000. So far, we have spent Rs 5,000 on our one-way journey and on a room that we have taken on rent in Deendayal Nagar here."

Kumar was a cook with a caterer and lost his job about three months ago due to the lockdown.

When the concerned district administration found out about the couple's travels, Gwalior collector, Kaushlendra Vikram, Singh informed the district's women empowerment officer, Shaleen Sharma, to take care of the husband and wife and provided them with Rs 5,000 as support. The administration will reportedly also pay for their rent and make arrangements for their food. They have also been offered that arrangements will be made for them to go back to their village.

Since the wife is pregnant, special medical attention is being paid to her and an ultrasound is scheduled to be done on Sunday.
