To Help Them Rehabilitate, Puducherry Central Jail Is Teaching Prisoners Farming
The inmates have cultivated fruits, greens and flowers. The Central Jail is situated on the East Coast Highway in Puducherry, and houses about 300 inmates who are being held within the jail as trial prisoners and convicted prisoners.
Rehabilitation is important for convicted criminals in order to let them re-enter society as better human beings - Puducherry Central Jail inmates are experiencing proper rehabilitation which has the potential to change their lives.
The inmates have cultivated fruits, greens and flowers. The Central Jail is situated on the East Coast Highway in Puducherry, and houses about 300 inmates who are being held within the jail as trial prisoners and convicted prisoners.
The jail authorities are providing the inmates with training to help reduce their stress and make them self-employed after they go back home once their sentence is served.
On behalf of Sri Aurobindo Society Charity of the Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry, required coaching on built-in farming and nature farming has been supplied to the prisoners.
Almost three acres of land have been allotted inside the jail premises, and prisoners have been ploughing the land which has not been in use for years.
According to reports, this may bring in a revenue of Rs 5 lakh per year - Bananas, tomatoes, eggplants, watermelons, papayas, inexperienced chillies, turkey berry, ginger, turmeric, cardamom, apples, oranges and sunflower are being cultivated. The crops are also being used for the jail kitchen.
Animals such as cows, goats and rabbits are also reared on the premises to make compost and pesticides - the animals are also maintained by the prisoners.
"Farming provides us a whole peaceable sleep within the jail. We now realise how farmers develop meals,¡± one of the prisoners said. Another prisoner said, ¡°We got here as prisoners by committing crime, now we are going to exit as farmers.¡±
