After Getting School To Introduce Arts Stream, Uttarakhand Girl Tops Class XII CBSE Exam

On July 13, CBSE announced class XII board examination results. Anushka studying in Nirmala Convent, a resident of Haldwani-Kathgodam scored 98.6% creating a precedent. Anushka did something for her school that the students in the future will be thankful to her for: She is the one who insisted on having the arts stream in her school.

Here¡¯s her story.

After scoring a whopping 97.2 % in class X, Anushka had to a big decision to make as a student: What stream to choose? She wanted to sign up for arts stream but that was not an option at her school. As a matter of fact, many private schools in Uttarakhand give priority to science and commerce and only a handful have arts.

In India, it is often assumed that top scorers usually opt for science and commerce, but Anushka had other plans.

Talking to Indiatimes Hindi, Anushka said, "There was no art stream in a good school in my city; only science and commerce were available in most schools, and because of that I would have had to leave school. I had made up my mind to take up arts. For this, I applied to a well-known school in Delhi, far from this city and even got admission there. However, paying such high fees and taking care of the hostel cost would have been difficult for my middle class family.¡±

"I talked to my principal and told him that I might have to leave school. The school on its part decided to introduce Arts steam. Some said it would take about an year to set up the Arts stream but my school got it functional in a month. I am grateful,¡± she explained.

Talking to IndiaTimes, Principal of Nirmala Convent Senior Secondary School (Kathgodam) Sr. Speaking, Josy Thomas said, "Anushka has topped our school, she is a sharp student. When students who score decent marks in Class 10 prefer going for Commerce or Science, she chose Arts. She inspired us to introduce the Arts stream in the school itself. Taking inspiration from Anushka, many other bright students opted for Arts stream. We congratulate Anushka and hope all her dreams come true."

Anushka's mother Geeta Pandey is a physics teacher in a government school. She has always encouraged her daughter to do her best. Her father Pramod Kumar Pandey is ecstatic about her success.
