It went down the canal as it was thirsty and was looking for a source of water, but once it got down, it realised it could not make its way out.
In the video one can see that it trying to get out of the canal by climbing out of the waterway, but is unable to do so. Reportedly it had been trying to get out for a few hours before humans came to his rescue.
The locals, after seeing the animal in distress immediately, contacted the wildlife department who tried to get the elephant out with the help of a makeshift ladder. Since the elephant was too heavy, that did not seem to work initially and it kept falling back into the canal.
That's when the authorities made another ladder to help the adorable animal in distress and this time, the determination of the elephant and the smart move on behalf of the department officials worked!
It is really heartwarming to see that in some place, in some individuals, humanity is still alive.
