87-Year-Old Woman Earns Her Second Master's Degree, Gets Special Tribute By Ontario Legislature

Mrs. Varatha Shanmuganathan, a Canadian resident, proved all the naysayers wrong as she became the oldest person to graduate with a master¡¯s degree from York University.

Elderly Woman Earns Her Second Master's Degree At the Age of 87 Years
Varatha was specially honoured in a ceremony at the Provincial Parliament at the Ontario Legislature where the members stood up in roaring applause for the elderly woman. Vijay Thanigasalam, a member of the Provincial Parliament, posted an inspiring video of his tribute to the scholar.
Varatha¡¯s journey with education started in India where she got her bachelor¡¯s degree. She later earned a diploma in education from the University of Ceylon. After which worked hard to get her first master¡¯s degree in her mid-50s from the University of London. After finding out about the laws at York University which offer Canadian citizens over the age of 60 waived tuition fees.
Besides his applaud-worthy tribute for Varatha, Vijay also wrote in his Instagram caption, ¡°It was my privilege to honour Mrs. Varatha Shanmuganathan at the Ontario Legislature.¡± He continued, ¡°Varatha amma¡¯s love for teaching and learning has allowed her the opportunity to live and teach in four different continents throughout her life.¡°

He also revealed, "In 2019, Varatha amma learned that York University provided a tuition waiver incentive for seniors and was encouraged by her daughter to apply for the master¡¯s program." He noted that despite the challenges of the pandemic, the elderly scholar finished her degree.
The MPP further added, "As she continues to be a fruitful presence in the lives of many, at the age of 87, she has never given up on the power of education. She is an inspiration to the younger generation beginning their journey or our seniors looking for the next adventure. She teaches us all that learning is a lifelong commitment." He concluded his post, "I am eager to see where Varatha amma¡¯s next venture takes her and wish her all the very best in everything she does."
