Republic Day 2020: 22 Children Shortlisted For The National Bravery Awards
In news that'll make the nation proud once again, 10 girls and 12 boys have been selected for the National Bravery Awards. These awards will be given to them on Republic Day, January 26, 2020. These brave kids have been selected from 12 different states of India.
- An 11-year-old girl who saved a child from getting kidnapped is one of six children from the northeast who have been shortlisted:
11-year-old Carolyn Malsawmtluangi from Mizoram has become the epitome of bravery and presence of mind by saving a minor from getting kidnapped. A student of class four in Muana Primary School, Carolyn not only rescued the child from the clutches of a kidnapper but also reunited her with her family after four days. Community Health Action Network (CHAN), an anti-human trafficking group of the Salvation Army Church, last year, awarded Carolyn with an appreciation certificate and a cash price of Rs 5,000.

Another courage driven kid boy Kamal Krishna Das who, in September 2018, jumped into the flooded Brahmaputra river to save his mother, aunt and a stranger. This happened during a heavy flood situation when a country boat carrying Kamal and his family hit the pillars of the water supply project and overturned. Witnessing this situation his mother shouted at him to take off his shoes and swim to safety.
When Kamal reached the spot of safety, he didn¡¯t see his mother and aunty anywhere. He quickly turned into a saviour knowing that his mother didn't know how to swim and jumped into the water and pulled his mother out and took her to safety. Immediately within no time he dived back into the river and rescued his aunt. After saving both of them, he saw a woman in burqa with a child in her arms struggling to reach the shore. He immediately acted fast and saved both of them too.

- Three Odisha girls make it to the list of National Bravery Awards recipients:
On January 2, a picnic party of 52 people was on its way back from the Hukitolato Kuiang, an unmanned island in the Bay of Bengal. It is a popular picnic spot in Kendrapara district on a boat. Unfortunately, the boat started sinking near Nipania Village. Hearing the screams for help two girls Purnima Giri (16 years) and Sabita Giri (15 years) jumped in the river to save people thereby putting their lives at risk. In this incident they saved 12 people from drowning.

10-year-old Srimati Badra helped her friend who came close to losing her life on railway tracks. On November 27, 2018, Srimati Badra along with Pramila Munda were crossing the railway track to return to their houses when a stationary goods train suddenly started moving. Showing quick aid to the situation, Srimati pulled her friend Pramila out of the track. She carried her on her shoulders for 300 metres up to her residence and saved her life.
- 12-year-old Venkatesh who guided an ambulance through a flooded bridge one of two children from Karnataka selected for the award:
On August 11, 2019, Venkatesh, a student of class VI at Government Primary School at Hirerayanakumpe Village of Raichur district was playing with a group of friends when he saw an ambulance that got stuck. It was carrying six children and a woman¡¯s dead body and got stuck on a flooded bridge. The ambulance was going to Machanoor village in Yadgir district. When the ambulance driver named Manju, called the group of boys to guide and help him cross the bridge, Venkatesh volunteered. He guided the ambulance by pushing himself in the water on the flooded bridge. His efforts were registered and made him a hero and a braveheart too.
Another recipient from the state is 9-year-old Aarti Kiran Shet from the Uttara Kannada district, who saved her two-year-old brother from an attacking cow.

Sartaj Mohidin Mugal (16 years old) and Mudasir Ashraf (19 years old) from Badgam have been shortlisted from the National Bravery Awards.
On February 26 Balakot airstrike, as Indian and Pakistani fighter jets were engaged in combat over the problems in Naushera sector in Jammu and Kashmir, the news hit that a helicopter Mi-17 has crashed in Budgam which had six IAF personnel onboard and a civilian. Mudasir Ashraf was one of the many villagers who took charge and rushed to the crash site.

The crashing helicopter hit a villager in the incident, Kifayat Hussain who caught fire. This courageous kid Mudasir went close to the crashed helicopter which was still burning and tried to save Kifayat Hussain.
- Other recipients and bravehearts:
The other recipients are Kanti Paikra and Bharneshwari Nirmala, both from Chhattisgarh. Zen Sadavarte and Akash Machindra Khillare are from Maharashtra. Muhammed Muhsin (16 years old) and Adithya K (15 years old) come from Kerala. Also on the list of recipients are Alaika (13 years old) and Rakhi (10 years old).
The National Bravery Awards were started by the Indian Council for Child Welfare in 1957 to recognize the children for their outstanding deeds of bravery and service that inspires others to do the same.
Each awardee receives a medal, certificate and cash. The brave hearts also get financial assistance through donations from philanthropists till they complete graduation. The ones opting for professional courses get scholarships as well.
