'Sad reality of India': Supporters react as Kunal Kamra slams crackdown, shares 'how to kill artist democratically'
Comedian Kunal Kamra has been facing backlash after a satirical joke about Maharashtra minister Eknath Shinde, leading to venue vandalism, multiple FIRs, and police notices even for audience members. In response, Kamra defended his stance on free speech, questioning the use of "democracy" to silence artists.

The Kunal Kamra controversy shows no signs of slowing down. After cracking a 'gaddar' joke, without explicitly naming Maharashtra minister and former CM Eknath Shinde, Kamra has found himself at the centre of a political storm. Enraged Shiv Sena workers vandalised the venue where he performed and have been actively searching for him (as revealed in a leaked audio call circulating on X). Multiple FIRs have already been filed against the comedian, and now, in a shocking turn, police have served notices to even audience members from his show. In response, Kamra has responded on X with a pointed, albeit subtle, remark - questioning the use of 'democracy' to 'kill an artist.'
The 36-year-old stand-up comedian took to X to share a photo outlining a "step-by-step guide" on how to "kill an artist democratically."

On Reddit, users expressed outrage over the situation. One commented, "Utterly disgusting, notice for the audience? Tf. Do they have an IOTA of shame. Lamborghini guy got bail hours after killing people. Many murder, rape cases unsolved, scam cases leading to suicides, corrupt banks, corrupt cronies, gangsters on lose after raping and killing. What has the state become, why are the people letting stuff like these to happen?"

Another wrote, "A society at war with its youth is meant to fade away into obscurity as a failed attempt at civilisation, sent to its doom by its elders deluded by lies about a glorious past."
A third remarked, "This is how democracy dies...one step at a time¡ Congratulations Indians...we are heading towards the death of freedom of speech and expression."
Yet another added, "Ah, classic, 'They can't debate, so they try to silence him via violence.' Respect to the madlad-Kamra for standing his ground, calling out everything and still roasting them harder than Maharashtra's heat, lol."
Why Kunal Kamra is being summoned
In a performance at Mumbai's Habitat comedy club, Kamra performed a parody song that implicitly criticised Shinde, labeling him a "gaddar" (traitor) for his role in the 2022 political upheaval that led to the downfall of Uddhav Thackeray's government.
The performance, uploaded to YouTube in March 2025, sparked significant backlash from supporters of Shinde's Shiv Sena party. In response, party workers vandalized the Habitat comedy club.
Subsequently, multiple First Information Reports (FIR) have been filed against Kamra, accusing him of defamation and public mischief.
On March 28, 2025, the Madras High Court granted him interim anticipatory bail until April 7.
In a further development, the Mumbai Police have reportedly summoned attendees of Kamra's show for questioning, indicating an expansion of the investigation. Kamra has remained defiant, refusing to apologise and defending his right to political satire.
Rahool Kanal, General Secretary of the Shiv Sena Yuva Sena (Shinde faction), stated on Monday that Kunal Kamra would receive a ¡°true Shiv Sena-style¡± welcome upon his return to Mumbai.
